Hi, my name is Olivia, I am seventeen years old, and my mother is an english teacher. My friends sometimes say that I have a rather abrasive personality, but I like to ensure that I won’t be forgotten. I care about people, probably too much. I want people to know that they can come to me if they ever need someone to listen. I don’t ever judge people, no matter what. I love the performing arts. I perform in any medium I can, on the football field, onstage, or even in cafes. I am very visual and kinetic. Music and performing are my life. I am funky and strange. I do what I like and I look like what I like. I am both logical and spiritual, liberal and traditional, modern and retro. I define myself and no one else, and no one else defines me. I don’t give in to peer pressure, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, and I never will. I don’t believe in using a foreign substance to produce artificial happiness. I am very spiritual, not religious. I believe that everything is connected but that we are all unique. I believe in hope, in love, and in second chances. I believe that everything happens for a reason, but that we are not controlled by an already planned fate. I believe in the power of the human spirit. I believe in the American dream and that anything is possible. I believe that we go on after we die but that we should live each day with purpose. I am a lover not a fighter, but I will fight (and damn hard) for what I love. I like to live in the moment, I believe in "Carpe Diem" I know sometimes if you don’t go out and just do something, no one will do it for you. I also believe that “whatever doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger.” I make mistakes and do stupid stuff, but I have no regrets, I believe that you shouldn’t regret something if you learned from it. I often tell my friends, “no regrets, only lessons learned."

Somalia: A Look Back
Ibn Battuta is one of history’s great explorers. He set out from his native Tangier in 1325, when he was just 21. By the time he returned home for good almost 30 years later, he had covered some 120,000 km and nearly every part of the Islamic world.
What makes me so astonished is to read about this great scholars account of his visit to the Somali coastal capital Mogadishu in 1331. He paints a picture of an exotic, vibrant and rich nation which played a vital role in world trade.

Mogadishu is a very large town. The people are merchants and very rich. They own large herds of camels…and also sheep. Here they manufacture the textiles called after the name of the town; these are of superior quality and are exported to Egypt and other places.

Just makes me wonder what happened to this Somalia? (Graphics|Text)

I remember learning about him in madrasa, Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta the man who travelled the lands of the Ummah. His books called Rihla which translates into “the Journey”.
